I'm looking for a good computer that can play hl2 and hl games with 100 fps or around that area. I was wondering if this was the best deal I could get < http://www.nanosys1.com/sys-g4375.html >
Posted by: Guest on Feb. 08 2007,08:28

looks decent enough to me, esspecially for the price.  idk if you'll get 100 fps out if it for sure or not myself. then again you just might.  :)

I decided to go a little cheaper and get an e-machines. Intel Celeron 2.7ghz with 1gb of ram for only $289. I figured I'll just buy a better video card and it would be cheaper.

buy AMD... stay away from that Celery crap

< buy this... >

and this... < video card >

you won't be sorry  :;):

< you need ram to.. >

if you don't have all the money.. buy the bare bones first and the rest as you can... keep the machine you have for another month or two... what ever it takes... 3 months after the e machine... you will wish you had...

yeah man, stay away from Pentiums... this one here that i'm on ( P4 ) at my parents blows massive chunks....  Tried to tell'em not to go this way and i'd build'em one cheaper and better... Can't even game on this rig and it has 1 gig of ram in it!
Posted by: slatts on Feb. 09 2007,17:18

intel chips are so expensive because of the name. they should only be about 1/8th of the price of an AMD chip. thats all they can do.. ;)
when was the last time you saw AMD with 2 then 3 then 4 guys painted blue on tv?
at a cost of billions of dollars a year for advertisment?
who do you think pays for the advertisment on tv?
:p

I just bought this computer cause it was cheap and it was better than my last one. AMD Athlon(xp) 2500+, 1.83ghz. 1 gig of ram. 72gb of hard drive space. It sorta took a dump on me, nothing will display on the monitor when I turn it on. I took it to compusa and they said it'd cost $300+I gotta buy the parts just to fix it. So I figured I'll just get a new one.

yep they would want $300.00 and i bet they tried to sell you a new one.
what did they say was wrong with it?

my other machine is a XP 2600 and i luv it.
but i just wanted a 64- bit machine...

Bane has a XP 2500 over clocked.
let us know what is fried and maybe we can help you out.

will the machine post? does it go beep? when you try to boot it up?
can you get into the Bios and reset to factory defaults?
try that first.
if you just have no display from windows could be a video card or a bad onboard chip, that can be fixed the a video card.
could be a bad stick of ram.... i don't know i can't see it so you have to post it... give me as much detail as you can.  :;):

if you were running an XP 2500 it means that you already have an ATX form factor case and power supply.
and i would assume around 400 watt.
if you want to rebuild your old case you can do it your self cheap and save some money by using some of your old stuff.
cd, hard drive etc if you like.
or just the case and power...
and you want to go 64 bit dual core..

< Cheap board and chip >
you will have to buy ram..
and video card.. but doesen't ave to be high end to game.

you don't want to buy a board for AGP cards.. they are so yesterday... lol.
and any board that has AGP will not be fast enough or up-gradable in the future.

At first they said my motherboard was fried, so I went and bought a new one. Hooked it up and the same thing happened. (Fans and everything turns on, no beep, and I can't even get into the bios settings, the monitor light just says orange)

Then they said it was my power supply, they said it was reading negative. So I went and bought another one that they recommended. Still didn't help.

I know it's not the video card because that's what I'm using now. And I installed a brand new 512mb stick of ram in it and that wasn't the problem either.

Actually, now that I remember. Compusa did say something about something being wrong with my hardware, but they wouldn't say what.

Posted by: slatts on Feb. 09 2007,20:54

well if you have a new Power and mobo, you changed the ram.
that only leaves one thing that will stop the board and bios from posting... the cpu is fried.
do you know any one who has a socket A board you can try thier processor in your two boards?

if the fans ran the psu is not fried and reading 0 or negative.

sounds to me they have a bunch of high school kids in the back doing the testing. or they only deal with Intel crap and don't know anything about AMD (like a buddy of mine who has his own shop and dosen't touch, stock, or know anything about AMD) the socket A boards for thier time will be jumperless so everything is auto.. and you bought a new one.. so CPU is dead.

Posted by: lil man on Feb. 09 2007,21:15

No, I don't know anybody with a socket a processor.
Posted by: lil man on Feb. 09 2007,21:26

Since I can't get that computer to work. I can take that hard drive and stick it in this computer right?
Posted by: slatts on Feb. 09 2007,21:40

sure and you can use same OS. don't have to format or lose data or settings.
but you will be required to reinstall windows over top of the one that is there..
and everything will be fine.... turn on your MSN

I tried playing some games on here earlier today and I was only getting 50 fps, when on my old computer I was getting 100. It's the same video card (ATI Radeon 9200se, 128mb) Is it because of the processor that I'm only getting this little amount of fps?
Posted by: Guest on Feb. 13 2007,16:14

could be that, more then likely... could also be the video isnt tweaked? if all else fails, go back to the 1st answer. ;)  on this rig of my parents i cant even play UT99... and it's a P4 P.O.S! 1 gig memory and a decent video card ( for UT 99 ) but it doesnt work good with ANY games... Even put my brothers radeon 9600 in here and did the same thing... cpu sux majorly... even bench marks on pcpitstop show that it isnt what it's supposed to be at. what do i do? ( takes machine out in the back yard, aims... FIRE! ) i miss UT... :(

Posted by: lil man on Feb. 13 2007,21:02

All my stuff on pcpitstop says it's doing fine though, even my video card is reporting as well as it used to.
Posted by: wilder on Feb. 14 2007,17:57

are you playing at the same resolution or higher?

if the cpu is better, ram is same amount, dont see why you couldnt get the same ballpark fps unless your resolution is different.

Did you get the basic 3dmark score on your old rig?  And compare it with your new?

whats wrong with intel?  Their Core 2 Duo is rocking AMD.  AMD got nothign to compete at the moment.  I would get one if i could, but i only build a amd last year!  $%@#$^%

My desktop res is 1024x768 and my ingame is 640x480. Last time I checked my video score in pcpitstop was the same.

well if you ask.. intel blows. don't like em, don't want em.
i don't care if they come out with 12 core or even a bakers dozzen.

i have owned and built both. and AMD is my preff.

sounds like you're being bias!

As far as I know:
P2 vs K6:  p2 is faster/better/stable.  k6 is more affordable.
P2 vs K6-2:  k62 is better.
P3 vs K6-2: P3 is better.
P3 vs Athlon: Athlon is better
P4 vs Athlon: P4 533 FSB with Hyperthread is better by small margin.
P4 vs Athlon64: Athlon64 is better overall
P-D vs Athlon64:  Athlon64 is better for games; P-D is good for productivity.
P-D vs Athlon64 X2: Athlon64 X2 is better
Core Duo vs Athlon64 X2: in the air.  Practically tied.
Core 2 Duo vs Athlon64 X2: Core 2 Duo wipes the floor.  We're talking about 2X faster and cost less!

AMD has no respond to core 2 duo yet.  Except they drop the prices of all the CPUs that perform the same to match Intel's price.  Core 2 Duo is the current king of the hill, and they just recently created a quad core.

In the "high end" market, Intel is currently ruling and there is no equivalent from AMD.  It's kinda hard to stay bias.  I think AMD is desperately trying to catch up; they claim to release a quad core, but Intel beat them to it.

i have intel machines for work (company machines)
and AMD for home. most times i take work home and do projects from home to work. most times machines are about the same. ram, vid, speed.

just seems i spend more time YELLING at the work machines than i do at home. slow... hangs... crashes...
the only thing i have crash at home is UT 99.
twice as much at work as i use UT ED 2.0 at work a lot to build models at work for work designs.
i like the 3D...

I just did another pcpitstop test and here it is < http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=WT1WFW8NDQWSF60J >

well what type of intel you got at work?  you cant compare some old intel junk at work with your babies at home.

My old p4 at work is solid as a rock.  It hardly crashes.  but i'm also allow to maintain my own desktop; i dont have to let stupid "I.T." department maintain it.  That pc is 6 years old now!  they havent gave me an upgrade yet.  :(

obvious if i compare it to my babies at home it's a lot slower; since i continuously upgrade and maintain them.  I build my workstation 2 years ago.  That time AMD Athlon 64s and X2s was ruling the market.  Hands down if i have to pick between AMD and Intel then it would be AMD.

I sort of loss my mood to upgrade this year, so I dont think i'll be building a high end pc for a long time unless mine breaks.  I find that i spend less and less time playing PC games.  Heck I spent almost 2 grand last year; and I've only played on it about 10 times!  So I think I'm gonna put the money until home improvement this year.

*IF* I were to upgrade again, With the Intel being up to 2x as fast as AMD "FX" CPU's It's hard not to want to buy a Core 2 Duo.

If you only have $200 and you have to pick between a Core 2 Duo vs AMD Athlon 64 X2; I'd pick Core 2 Duo.  If you only have $100 and have to pick between a Pentium 4 vs Athlon64; I'd pick Athlon64.  I'm not bias towards brand at all.  I just want the fast, highest quality chip my money can buy.

Well, I just went and talked with a manager today about the job and I got it, starting out at 7.00 an hour working like 19 hours a week. All I gotta do is fill up propane tanks.
Posted by: Queen-B on Feb. 20 2007,13:17

Thats good lil man.Hope everything works out with the job.Becareful I heard propane Is Dangerous.
Posted by: vicious_killer on Mar. 02 2007,09:09

lol, yea pentiums suck, trust me i should know.. sup all
Posted by: lil man on Mar. 02 2007,23:46

If I would've known how much pentiums suck for gaming, I would've gotten an amd based comp there. I just saw 2.7 ghz and figured it was fast enough to game on.
Posted by: slatts on Mar. 05 2007,22:16

lol. if a guy sold you a souped up hot rod car, with nito and told you it would do high 9's in the 1/4 mile...

then he took the wheels off and put on wheels from a little red wagon, before he gave it to you.

you wouldn't get very far. horse power isn't everything.
i had my old 1.2 gig AMD Athlon just fall back into my lap. the person who bought it from me a couple of years ago, up-and gave it to me for doing some work.

she still games just fine, but mind you it has other parts inside really helping it alone the way...
