I hate to use cracks to overcome this, but I hate to take out my original CDROM/DVD from it's box (which I'm trying to protect in mint condition) just to play the game that took me 15 minutes to install.

I understand they want to stop piracy, but this isnt stopping piracy and it makes it annoying to play the game for legitimate customers!

the piraters can get cracks for it anywhere these days!

I applaud ID for having a doom3 patch that eliminated the need for a CD to be present in the CDROM to play (patch 1.03+) but then Quake4 requires the CDROM!  Arrghhh!

Isnt the CDKEY good enough protection?  Like requiring and checking the CDKEY in order to play online??

Into they smarten up, I'm going to have to resort to finding cracks to remove the need of a CD to be inserted to play the darn game.

Thats what I like about steam.  it rocks!  it's a good way to register games I own to my username.  And I can play that game anytime I want, and need to go grab the CDROM.  It's not a perfect system because you need to have internet access for account validation, but you only need to register it once for each game.then you can go to offline mode.

maybe someone should offer a 3rd party service to these publishers that handles game licensing and registration with.  Once you register there, you you can play the game without the CDROM...

The bad thing about steam is it updates too much & its really laggy, and I mean EXTREMELY! And also sometimes the updates screw everything up really bad.  :oo:  But I do see your point Wilder, maybe you should start up an online network thing bro? Something simalar to steam? I'd support your idea's fully, not financially tho!  :D Would toss you a chip here & there.. But not the entire cost. lol

Gamespy has "< Direct2Drive >" service which is pretty cool.  It works similar to what I describe, and requires no CD/DVD in drive!
